Germany and Mexico have already booked their knockout spots, while Canada's stunning 6-0 win over Qatar has them leading Group B. Meanwhile, Groups G and H are completely wide open with all teams tied on one point each, setting the stage for decisive final matches.
The 2026 World Cup group stage is heating up, with Germany and Mexico already securing their places in the knockout round. Germany leads Group E with six points and a remarkable +7 goal difference after a 7-1 demolition of Curaçao and a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast. Mexico tops Group A with two clean-sheet victories against South Africa (2-0) and South Korea (1-0). The USA also impresses in Group D with six points from wins over Paraguay (4-1) and Australia (2-0).
But the biggest surprise has been Canada, who sit first in Group B with four points and a +6 goal difference after a 6-0 thrashing of Qatar. Other surprise packages include Morocco (second in Group C with four points) and Japan (second in Group F with four points and a +4 GD, level with Netherlands).
Several teams have already been eliminated. Ecuador is third in Group E with just one point and zero goals scored. Türkiye is bottom of Group D with no points and no goals. Tunisia is last in Group F with zero points and a -8 goal difference. These teams will be heading home early.
Based on performances so far, here are the top eight teams:
The most intriguing situations are in Groups G and H, where all four teams have one point each after one match. In Group H, the matches between Saudi Arabia vs Spain and Uruguay vs Cape Verde Islands will determine who advances. Similarly in Group G, Belgium vs Iran and New Zealand vs Egypt are must-watch fixtures.
In Group J, Argentina and Austria lead with three points each. Their head-to-head clash will decide the group winner, while Jordan and Algeria must win to stay alive. In Group I, Norway and France also have three points each. France faces Iraq, while Norway takes on Senegal in a must-win for the African side.
As of June 21, only Mexico and Germany have qualified. The following teams have been eliminated: Czechia, South Africa, Haiti, Türkiye, Ecuador, Curaçao, and Tunisia. All other teams remain in contention, setting up a thrilling final round of group matches.
